Priorities Pt.4 - Decisions

Decision Making Like a Boss

“that Christ would come to have first place in everything.” Colossians 1:18

1. What does the Bible say?

  • Yes/No

Where God speaks a clear yes or no we have no freedom before him to obey or disobey. We must obey God right away. But in issues where God does not speak that clear yes or no, we have freedom. –Tim Challies

2. Who is God?

  • He is sovereign

But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases. Ps 115:3

  • He is good

Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Ps 136:1

  • He is wise

Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite. Ps 145:9

  • He is trustworthy

Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. Prov 3:5-6

3. Who are you?

  • You are a sinner by nature
  • You have particular sin bents
  • You are not to be trusted

The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? Jer 17:9

  • You are young

4. What is God’s will for your life? (courtesy John MacArthur)

  • Are you saved?
  • Are you Spirit filled?

So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Holy Spirit. Eph 5:17

  • Are you sanctified?

For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”1 Thes 4:3

  • Are you submitting?

Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. I Pet 3:13-15

  • Are you saying thanks?

In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ. 1 Thes 5:18

  • Are you suffering?

Let those also who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. 1 Pet 4:19

5. What does wisdom say?

  • Have you prayed about it?

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5

  • Does it violate your conscience?

conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, Rom 2:15

  • Have you checked the proverbs?
  • Have you sought counsel from older, godlier people?

He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.  Prov 13:20

  • What would Jesus do?

6. Does it have spiritual benefit?

  • Will this decision bring you closer to Christ?

  • Will it profit and edify you?

All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify.  1 Cor 10:23

  • Does it have the potential to enslave you?

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.  1 Cor 6:12

  • Will it be a good example to others?

Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe.  1 Tim 4:12

7. Move forward

Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Ps 37:4
